Motorcycle Repair: carburetor?, marvel mystery oil, winter storage

Question
I have a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 450 motorcycle. It was sitting for a while in the garage. I was able to start up with full choke, but when try to accelarate the engine just do the opposite, the rpm drops and the engine quits. Tried this several times but couldn't get a stable engine run.
I was thinking that the carburator need some cleaning but I wasn't sure. Before I take the carburator apart I would need some advice.

Answer
Hi Steve.

Follow your instinct.  Clean the carbs.  Leaving the bike sit for anything more than a few weeks means prepping it for storage.  That means drain the fuel from the tank, run the bike till all of the fuel in the carbs has been used up and drop a teaspoon of Marvel Mystery Oil into each of the cylinders.  This becomes critical during winter storage.

Since the bike has been sitting, it will require a bit more done to it;

1) Clean the carbs properly, as you had wanted to do initially.

2) Drain the fuel from the tank and get rid of it.  DO NOT USE IT. Then reseal the tank to prevent contamination of the new fuel.

3) Change the oil and oil filter.

4) Change the air filter.

That should solve the problem.

Let me know how it goes.
Good luck and ride safe.
