Motorcycle Repair: ignitor assembly failure for 89 radian YX600W, john brewer, unit assembly

Question
Mark,
I have an '89 Yamaha YX600W Radian that was running. It was cranking fine but nothing. I checked the lockout switches (neutral and kickstand) and they appear to be okay. Now I cannot get any spark out of ignition system at any cylinder when I pull each plug to check (this would seem to eliminate the coils). I've recharged the battery thinking I was not getting a high enough voltage for the digital ignitor. I checked the alternator and pickup head for any signs of damage. I also went over the wiring as best I could and saw nothing unusual. The previous owner (I purchased bike September, 2005) had replaced the ignitor unit assembly, used, and was upfront about that he had trouble locating one. Now I think the ignitor has failed again and I'm not able to find a replacement or even confirm 100% that problem is the ignitor except all signs point to it and of course previous history. I desparately want to get the bike back on the road. Do you know of (1) test to confirm the problem to the ignitor or alternator, (2)a source for a replacement ignitor (it appears I can buy an alternator but not an ignitor, I tried)or (3)a kit to replace the ignitor. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
Hi John,

Test the charging system via the following website:
"www.electrosport.com/electrosport_fault_finding.html" or by the service manual's testing procedures.

Consider having a local electronics tech inspect the CDI for you.

The only source for Radian ignitors that I have is eBay. Keep checking back and perform searches using various search keywords for the part; CDI, ignitor, blackbox, ignition, etc...

I don't know of any kits to replace the ignitor.

Go to "www.motorcycleusa.com" and post your question on their message boards. Maybe someone there has a resource for Radian ignition components.

Respectfully,
