Motorcycle Repair: 1991 HD Evo lifter noise, hydraulic lifters, rocker boxes

Question
IN the summer of 2003 had my 91 FXRS-SP evo engine "hopped-up" with new heads,10.25 to 1 pistons, cam,Mikuni carb. I believe hydraulic lifters were used. After sufficient break-in and an additional 2,000 miles or so on the engine, I'm hearing a little ticking noise coming from the lower end of the engine, near the cam chest cavity. The ticking only starts after the engine is at operating temp. Could it be one of my lifters is bad? Is it a hard job to replace? It Dyno'd at 93 ft/lbs of torque and 91 horsepower while maintaining 80 Cubes.
Thanks

Answer
First thing you need to do is see if you have hydraulic or solid lifters. If you have solids, they might need adjusted. If you have hydraulic a little ticking doesnt hurt anything and usually doesnt start until the motor is warm when the oil is thinner. Alot of harleys have a slight tick in the units. The problem arises when the lifter colapses. then it needs changed. You can put new ones in, but you might still have a slight tick.
In order to put then in you have to pull the rocker boxes on the top end.
Good luck and happy riding
