Motorcycle Repair: 1986 Yamaha FZ 750 Carb Question, yamaha fz 750, float bowls

Question
how difficult is it to clean the carbs on my particular bike. Is there somrething you can run through the gas tank or do I need to tear them apart and clean them. If I do need to teat them apart some suggestions would be great. The bike seems underpowered and when I first got the bike it ran fine. I was told that on these bikes you need to clean the carbs about once a year since I live in Minnesota and the bike gets stored all winter. Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
Hi Josh.

First let's talk prevention for next year.

1)  When you store the bike for the winter, the one thing that you should do, that no one seems to do, is to drain the fuel out of the fuel tank and use it elsewhere.

2) Then run the bike till the fuel in the carbs is used up.

3) Place a teaspoon of Marvel Mystery Oil in each of the cylinders.

4) Place the battery on a seasonal trickle charger.

Now on to the existing problem;

 Have you checked the carb synch?  Do that before you start tearing into them for a cleaning.

 To clean the carbs you will need to pull them to properly clean them, but you may not need to seperate them from each other.
 You will need to pull the float bowls and clean the carbs with them taken apart as much as reasonably possible.
 A good soaking in carb cleaner may be in order if you see a brownish residue in the carbs after an initial cleaning.  That residue is varnish and will contaminate the fuel that you put in the bike.

That should help you.
Let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
