Motorcycle Repair: I need a cdi ignitor box for a 1985 kawasaki zx 1000. What years will fit ?, motorcycle salvage yards, kawasaki zx

Question
I have a 1985 Kawasaki zx 1000. It needs a cdi ignitor box. I cant seem to find that exact product anywhere. Is there any universal pARTS?

Answer
Hi April.

CDI ignitions are very touchy things and they are not prone to failure.  If you have exhausted all other possibilities and the ONLY thing left, that is a problem with the bike is the CDI box, then the dealership or any decent bike shop should be able to order one for you.  They can also tell you what other years may fit your bike.  If they can not get one for you, then there are a couple of options.

1) Check online at www.jcwhitney.com or www.denniskirk.com for the part.

2) There are motorcycle salvage yards all over the country. check for a CDI box with them.  But be sure of their return policy.  The part will cost you half of the cost of a new one, but most will not take a return on electronics or electrical parts.  Some, even if they send you the wrong part altogether.

Good luck and ride safe.
