Motorcycle Repair: OIL LEAK, worst case scenario, oil residue

Question
CHRIS I HAVE A SUZUKI SAGAGE 650. I OVERFILLED THE OIL AND SUBSEQUENTLY HAD PROBLEMS. AFTER DRAINING AND FILLING CORRECTLY, I NOTICED SOME OIL LEAKAGE ON THE GROUND. AND OVER THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE. WIPING THIS DOWN WEEKLY THE BIKE SEEMED TO RUN FINE. THIS YEAR I WANT TO HOPEFULLY CORRECT THIS PROBLEM AND I HAVE TAKEN THE TANK OFF AND CLEANED ALL AROUND. I NOTICED THAT THE BOLTS ON TOP OF THE EXHAUST WERE LOOSE. I TIGHTENED THEM UP AND WILL PUT BIKE BACK TOGETHER. I DID START THE  BIKE UP AND DIDNT SEE AND LEAKAGE BUT DIDNT RIDE. ANY IDEAS? THANKS

Answer
Hi Bill.

The solution to any future problems like that is to not overfill the oil again. :)

But seriously, when you have an oil overfill, there will be some oil intrusion, throughout the system, that will take a bit of time to work it's way out and it seems like you've gotten it out.  Worst case scenario, you may have some minor incidence of oil, but I doubt it. If there was going to be any recurrence then you should have seen it when you started the bike up again.

What you may want to do as well is to check the airbox and make sure that there is no oil residue in there that will clog up the air filter or get into the carb.

Good luck and ride safe.
