Motorcycle Repair: Rear Turn Signal Lights, honda shadow spirit, honda shadow spirit 750

So i just installed a verticle license plate holder on my 2003 Honda Shadow Spirit 750. When i was all done, i turned the key to run, and everything worked except my rear turn signal lights didnt come on, except for when i turned the blinker on as to indicate a turn, then they worked. So i checked all the wiring and it all seemed to have power and to be connected correctly, as there are only 2 wires that run to each turn signal.  I just can't figure out why the lights would work when I turn on a blinker, but don't work otherwise.   Any ideas would be appreciated.

A:  This is how they are designed to work.
