Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 2001 Raptor 660 starting problem, electrical diagnosis, 660 raptor

My 2001 660 Raptor will not start, warm or cold unless it has a charger with 14 + volts on the battery, or it has a jump from a second strong battery.  I have tried a new battery, but it will not start when I take the charger off.

I have spark under normal battery conditions with the plug out and on the side of the cylendar.

When started, it runs great.

Is there possibly a week iginition part that is going bad that won't work with the starter load on the battery?

HELP!
Thanks,
KEnt
Answer -
Hi Kent,

I suspect the starter motor's carbon brushes are worn beyond service limits and the starter motor has an excessive build-up of carbon powder.

Inspection would reveal the source of the problem.

I recommend getting a copy of the Serive Manual and learn about troubleshooting and electrical diagnosis.

I return tech files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested.

Please keep me advised on your progress with diagnosis and repairs.

Mark,

The starter spins the engine great, the motor just does not start when it is spinning.

Answer
Kent,

It's possible that an ignition component is defective or other problem is present.

Electrical diagnosis should be performed to identify the source of the problem.

I'll send tech files to your email addy.
