Motorcycle Repair: 01 GSXR1000 Exhaust Installation, stock exhaust, exhaust pipe

Question
Hello,
I just bought a Scorpion Full Exhaust System for my 2001 Suzuki GSXR1000.  I had no problem taking off the old header and exhaust but I noticed that on the stock exhaust pipe there was a cirlce looking piece inside the rear end of the exhaust pipe that is moved by cables when the ignition is turned on.  It looks as if it regulates back pressure when the ignition is turned on.  I really don't know what significance this has.  Should I just disregard the cables and install the Exhaust system?  Any help would be appreciated being the riding season is nearing.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Tanner.

Do not ignore those cables.  They are there for a very real and important reason.  Before installing the new exhaust, check with the manufacturer and a Suzuki mechanic to see what solution they have for that.  It may be that you got the wrong exhaust for the bike and they need to get you one that is compatible with the cable operated backpressure system.

Good luck and ride safe.
