Motorcycle Repair: Blinkers, honda nighthawk 750, blinkers

Question
Hi Chris
I am having a problem with the running lights on a 91 Honda Nighthawk 750. When running, only the left front blinker stays lit while the other three running lights stay off. However, all four do blink when signaling a turn. Luckily the tail brake light stays running. Any suggestions on where to start?

On a side note, I purchased set of aftermarket blinkers. They came with only two wires (red & black), but the front blinkers have a third green wire (horn?). I'm fine with reading mechanical diagrams, but wiring tends to get confusing. What's the purpose of the third green wire and can it be bypassed to connect the new blinkers?

I hope it makes sense to you. Spring is here and I've gotta ride. Thanks for the time, if anything. Ride safe.

Answer
Hi Will.

This sounds like a wiring problem.  There is likely a short in the wiring for the signal system.  Start with that and see what you find.

As far as the replacement signals, remember that not all aftermarket signal lights are compatible with all bikes.  As far as the green wire on the front blinkers, there is a reason that they have a third wire.  Unlike the rear blinkers that only come on when the signals are used, the front signal lights are running lights as well.  Therefore, you have a ground (usually black or black/white), a red wire for power to the running lights and a wire to the signal light (blinker).  Do not bypass any of the wires or you will be without either the running light or the blinker.  And remember that the brighter light is the blinker.

Good luck and ride safe.
