Motorcycle Repair: Stalling 650 seca 1982, winter storage, proper flow

Question
I have an 82 650 Seca and I started it yesterday after winter storage.  It started fine ran for 10 mins stalled started fine again and I shut it down.  When I went to start it again it revved high with the choke then calmed down but when I went to give it some gas it just bogged and died.  I had the tank off all winter for refinishing inside as it had a leak and now seems fine.  I can't get the bike to start again.  Any suggestions? What might be wrong and what I should do?

Thanks

Sue

Answer
Hi Sue.

Please tell me that you did not save the old fuel to use in the bike.  If you did, then get rid of it, because it is bad.  After a long storage always use fresh fuel.
Was there any fuel left in the float bowls on the carbs?  If you did not drain the floats, then the fuel that was in there would have left a residue that we call varnish.
Varnish impedes the proper flow of fuel through the carbs and the entire fuel system and can cause anything from rough running to not running at all.
What you need to do, in that case is to pull and properly clean the carbs.

Now if you did not leave fuel in the carbs, then there could still be some residue from any fuel that did not drain out.  This would create lesser problems, like the ones you have described.  If you drained the fuel from the entire system when you removed the tank, then put a bottle of fuel treatment (STP made with jet fuel is what I use) in the tank and run the bike.  Let it warm up properly and then try see if it still stalls out.  If the problem is minor residue, then that should clean it out and the bike should, barring any other issues, run like normal.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
