Motorcycle Repair: modifications, automatic compression release, suzuki rmz250

Question
My son is riding an 04 Suzuki RMZ250 and it is a little tough to start. When kicking it over, it doesn't seem to have much compression. It has an automatic compression release. Is it possible that the compression release is sticking or could it be a valve adjustment issue? How can I tell if it is one of the above? Should I look into modifying the valves and springs?

Answer
Get a copy of the service manual. It has illustrated procedures for troubleshooting symptoms, repairs, and maintenance.

Check spark plug condition. Clean or replace as necessary.

Check the condition and operation of the compression release valve and adjust as necessary.

Check cylinder compression and follow with a leak-down if necessary.

Check valve clearances and adjust as necessary.

Don't modify anything until you know the source of the problem.
