Motorcycle Repair: Timing problem, exhaust pipes, tail pipes

Question
I have a 1982 LTD 750 that is popping out the tail pipes. I have spark to all plugs, and fuel to all cylinders. Bike will run but has no power. Number 2 and #4 exhaust pipes get hot while running but #1 and 3 don't. I have found the timing marks and adjustment lock nuts but need help on the sequence to adjust the timing. As I am unemployed at the moment, I can not afford to take it to a shop. And finding a manual that covers it is next to impossible locally(Seattle,Wa) Your help and guidance are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Don

Answer
Hi Don.

This sounds like you have either a short in the wiring to the ignition system, your coil for #1 and #3 has failed or there is a fuel supply issue to the carbs in question.  This is not a timing issue.

The fact that the exhaust pipes at those cylinders are not heating up indicates a lack of fire to those plugs or a fuel issue to those carbs.

Let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
