Motorcycle Repair: clutch resevoir, suzuki gsxr1100, diaphragm seals

Question
hi
i have a 1990 suzuki gsxr1100 and have a problem with a sticking clutch after leaving it in the garage for over a year.i am trying to bleed the system to start with but i cannot figure out how the system works.
i have cleaned the resevoire and the piston on the handlebar with wd 40 and managed to losen it and can now see down the hole and see the piston working but when i put it together to bleed it and start pumping the lever the oil doesnt drain from the resevoir.i cannot see what purpose the rubber diaphragm serves either.hope you can help this mechanical retard.i need the bike for a trip to the continent this week but the garage can't fit me in for 10 days.

thanks for your help

steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

Working on a motorcycle hydraulic brake or clutch system can be frustrating.

In the future, do not use WD40 on master cylinder components. WD40 gums over time and may harm the diaphragm. Use brake spray cleaner or contact spray cleaner instead.

The master cylinder diaphragm seals, pumps, and creates a vacuum for the circuit to work.
