Motorcycle Repair: fuel pump GL1000, bill silver, diaphram

Question
Fuel pump question
1977 GL1000 Goldwing.

I think that the diaphram is leaking because a small amount to
gasoline is coming from the 'vent to atmosphere' hole.
The bike does run reasonably good but occasionally it acts like
the carbs are flooded. Connection here ? I'm not sure.

Is it possible to replace the diaphram without replacing the entire pump.
If so, where can one be obtained.

What is your opinion of buying a used pump ? My thought is... it would soon fail.

Is there an aftermarket source for new or rebuilt pumps ?

Answer
David....

I think that the diaphram is leaking because a small amount to gasoline is coming from the 'vent to atmosphere' hole.   Diaphragm failing.... yes.

The bike does run reasonably good but occasionally it acts like the carbs are flooded. Connection here ??? I'm not sure.     NO... Carbs would be getting less pressure as diaphragm gets weaker. Carb flooding is generally due to float valves worn/dirty or the seal between the two sides of the air box is bad.

Is it possible to replace the diaphram without replacing the entire pump.    NO.. they are about $90 complete.
If so, where can one be obtained.  HONDA

What is your opinion of buying a used pump? My thought is... it would soon fail.   Depends on when it was produced and how much use it has had. Yours is 30 years old and still working...

Is there an aftermarket source for new or rebuilt pumps ?  Not that I know of...  check with the various GW sites like:  http://www.classicwingclub.org/
