Motorcycle Repair: cost of repair, air filter oil, honda 450

Question
hi i have recently obtained a 76 honda 450 motorcycle that belonged to my father.  it has been sitting about 19 years.  As far as i know it was running the last time he used it before he placed it in the garage.  i was wondering how much it would cost to restore it to running condition and what it would need done to it, it is in almost perfect physical condition, thank you

Answer
Hi Brendan.

As far as cost, that is hard to say.  You would definitely need to see if the engine turns over with the kickstarter.  If it will not move, then the pistons are frozen in place and the heads, pistons and cylinders needs to be taken apart and redone.  That will be quite pricey, depending on where you take it to be done.

The tank will need to be resealed as well as the fuel line replaced and the carbs cleaned properly.  You will need to replace the air filter, oil and oil filter; Tires and inner tubes as well as the chain and possibly sprockets if they are rusty at all.
All of the bearings will need to be checked, serviced and (at least some of them) possibly replaced.
All of the wiring will need to be checked for shorts and other problems as well as replacing all of the fuses, no matter how good they may seem to be.

Good luck and ride safe.
