Motorcycle Repair: gear shaft bend, honda cbf 150, gear shaft

hi chris, am  karthik, from chennai india. i recently gt a honda CBF 150 ,2005 model  ( known here as unicorn). i didnt fix a crash gurad to the single down tube fr asthetic reasons...and as luck wud hav it i met with an accident recently when a stupid biker ramed staright into my bike shavin the front left fork and hittin my gear lever...from that day my smooth butter like gearshifts were gone ...it became clunky while shifting , and lots of vibrations in the frnt foot pegs and the handle bars..and i get this  constant feeling that something inside my gear box is rubbing itself against a metal object severely..i hav approached the service center guys  who repeatedly said the gear shaft is probably bent and ,that this is a huge repair and are suggesting me to replace the gearbox as a whole..actually i feel they r  a bit apprehensive abt opening the gearbox...wht do u suggest sir ? the gear box as a whole costs  a bomb..is it possible to replace the gear shaft alone ?..plz help

Hi Karthik.

If the shaft is bent, then it must get replaced.  Not only will it cause a serious safety hazard for you, but it can cause additional damage to your transmission and gearbox due to additional stress and wear on the system.

If the mechanics that you have been going to would rather change parts than fix the real problem, then find another that will or just let them change the parts.  Alternatively, you could change the parts yourself, if you get the repair manual and have the tools and some mechanical aptitude.  But remember that changing gear components (or any deep engine work) is a very time-consuming job that requires intensive attention to detail and strict adherance to proceedures and specs.
