Motorcycle Repair: Cam Timing and carb sync., allen bolt, cam timing

Question
I have a 1980 suzuki GS850L.  I was wondering if you could tell me were the hook up for carb sync is on this model? I think it is on the boot from the carb to the intake a allen bolt that needs to be removed.  I was also wondering if you could explain in detail and email me a picture of cam timing for this model?

Answer
Hi Tim.

While I do not carry specs for your bike, I can tell you that the carb synch connection on every bike is located on the intake manifolds (one per manifold).  Some bikes have a tube from each manifold and some other bikes have a screw/bolt of some type that you plug an adapter into for the Carbstyx (or vacuum guages).

As far as setting the timing and valves, you should get yourself the repair manual (they tend to run from 20-50 dollars).  It will have all of the diagrams as well as specs for everything on the bike so that you do not overtighten anything and so that you can set any and all gaps, timing, etc. correctly.  Even if you know certain proceedures by heart, the repair manual comes in handy as a backup as well as for the specs that tend to vary from bike to bike.

Good luck and ride safe.
