Do you know a good starting point on adjusting Carb floats? I seem to recall a measurement from the top of the valve tab to the top where the float valve pin connects but can't remember the measurement..it always got me close if not right on. Or do you have another suggestion. I'm working on a "83" Yamaha PW 80 and either run to lean; bowl empties and starves or I got gas pee'ing out the overflow tube and it floods! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Jesse.

Are you sure that the problem is the float valves?

The fact that the bowl empties is indicative of a problem with the fuel system between the tank and carb.  Perhaps there is something clogging the fuel line or blocking the fuel filter in the tank at the selector lever.

Start with that and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.

When I say the float bowl is empty it's from the float valve shuting off gas supply due to being adjusted  with the tab bent up high , there is gas in the float bowl but not much. On the other end I get the adjustment tab to low and I get gas pouring out of the overflow tube. I can't seem to get the adjustment right.

Answer
Hi Jesse.

adjusting the float valves is always a hit and miss proposition.  You have only 2 options when the floats are acting up; Keep adjusting them til they work right, or replace them.

To adjust the carbs, the real secret is to always make notes of how far you adjusted them each previous try and never repeating the previous adjustments.  You could also get the repair manual and check what it says about doing the adjustment on your bike.  It will also have pictures and diagrams.

I know that sounds kind of lame, but it is really the best way to do it if you are having difficulty doing that adjustment.

Good luck and ride safe.
