Motorcycle Repair: GL 1200 loud tappetts, motorcycle clutches, combustion chambers

Question
Periodically the tappetts on my GL 1200 (84 Aspencade) will get really loud like it sounds like they are not getting oil.  This will usually last from a few seconds to 30-45 seconds and then it goes away.  I have noticed it more on the right side.  This will sometimes occur when I am riding or have been riding for some time.  I thought it might be because the bike had been leaning on the kickstand but it happens when I am riding.  Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions?  Someone told me to put a little Lucas oil in the crankcase but still happens occasionally.

Answer
Roger,

This is common. It may take a few seconds for the hydraulic adjusters to pump-up (flow oil).

You could perform cylinder compression and leak-down tests to verify the sealing properties of the combustion chambers (condition of the engine). These tests will help determine if the valves are defective or worn beyond service limits.

Before adding Lucas products to the oil, be sure they are  designed for use with motorcycle clutches.
