Motorcycle Repair: clicking sound around engine, honda shadow, cam chain

When I start up my 1986 Honda Shadow 500 I hear a clicking sound on the left side in the engine vacinity can't tell if it is actually in the engine.  Previous owner said bike did this from day one of new purchase?  Not so sure about that! Could you narrow it down to what you think it may be?

Hi Peggy.

 I have never heard of any Honda making noises like that from day one.  If this sound is from the top of the cylinders, then it is likely to be a lifter out of adjustment or possibly the cam chain not tightened properly.  If it is from the bottom of the engine, then the problem could be something else altogether.

 If this was a problem from day one, then it could be totally normal, but if you are seriously concerned,  you should take it to a Honda certified mechanic to check out in person.
