Motorcycle Repair: kawasaki stater (staiter not sure), stator coil, dollors

Question
For the 1991 kawasaki 1000 police special does the motor have to be removed to replace the stater (alternator). Was told that if motor has to be removed would cost about 1100 hundred dollors if not about 300 hundred.  What do you think?   Walter

Answer
Hi Walter.

No, the engine does not have to be removed.  What idiot told you that the engine needs to be removed to pull the stator coil?  Never mind.  Ignore that person.

The stator coil is accessible from the engine sidecover.  the most you will have to remove is the floorboard assembly, so that you can access and remove the engine casing and sidecover.  Make sure that you get a new gasket for that sidecover when you replace the coil.

Good luck and ride safe.
