Motorcycle Repair: 1986 yamaha fz 750, yamaha fz 750, worst case scenario

Question
Hi Chris I recently purchased an 86 FZ 750... I went to put the kickstand down and accidentaly kicked the bike into gear with the clutch lever all the way out... Now the bike "thumps" into gear instead of shifting into gear smoothly. Only from a standstill does this occur. Durring normal riding i cant notice this problem. It just annoys me that from a stop it clunks really loud and hard. Some tell me its the clutch. Some say its the adjustment.. what do you think?

Answer
Hi Paul.

Something like that is hard to say for certain.  It could be either or both.

Start by checking the clutch for smoothness and to see if it engages early enough.

After that check your adjustments for the clutch and shifter.

Worst case scenario, it could be something deeper in the engine/transmission that could require the attention of your local mechanic.

Let me know what you find.

Good luck.
