Motorcycle Repair: Oil leaks, old harleys, chain oiler

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 350cc Royal Enfield thunderbird motorcycle (AVL engine, cv carb vm24, disc brakes and electric start).
I have noticed oil leaks in the area below the engine on the right side of the bike. Kindly tell me how to prevent (and seal) these leaks.
Thanks and best regards,
B.

Answer
Hi Bilari.

Oils leaks are a fact of life with all bikes, but they are mostly preventable with Preventive Maintainence.

First make sure that the leak isn't from some kind of automatic chain oiler, like the old Harleys had.

Once a week, make sure that all of the engine bolts are tightened to specs.  Also try to see if the seals and gaskets are in need of replacement or are damaged.  The repair manual has the replacement intervals for most of your parts.

Good luck and ride safe.
