Motorcycle Repair: yamaha xvz1200 transmission 1983, clutch adjustment, automobile engine

Question
Mark,
Can you tell me if I'm right on this? On yamaha xvz1200 do you have to remove the engine and split the cases just to get to the transmission? It has been without 2nd gear for quite some time but now it doesn't seem to have any of the gears meshing, unless maybe the clutch is just spinning or maybe you have another possible scenerio.
                         Thank You

Answer
Hi Craig,

Q:  "...On yamaha xvz1200 do you have to remove the engine and split the cases just to get to the transmission?"

A:  Yes. The cases must be separtaed to access the transmission.

I would like to tell you that the problem may be a clutch adjustment or other simple tuning fix.

I would need to inspect the problem to give you an  accurate opinion on the cause of the problem. There's not enough description of the problem and circumstances leading up to the current condition for diagnosis.

Consider having a local Yamaha tech give you an estimate of repairs. Extimates usually costs an hour of labor. The tech will likely find the problem and provide you with estimate of repairs and parts, if any.

To give you an idea of how reliable the Venture's tranmissions are, many V-Max drag racers swith their V-Max bottom ends with a Venture's bottom end.

The Venutre's bottom end is heavy-duty. Kind of like comparing a automobile engine block two main crank journal with a four bolt main journal.
