Joel, stuck pistons are no fun to repair and gets expensive in the long run. Try NOT to beat on the piston with a hammer and wood block, if possible. On 305s I found I could use a steering wheel puller to place it over the studs and then use the center bolt to push the pistons out.
The stud spacing on the smaller engines may be too close to do this, but you get the idea. Maybe make up a plate with some stud holes drilled in correctly and weld a nut to the center hole to make a pusher plate out of it.

If you can't get see the masterlink with a flashlight and a long bent scribe tip to pry it loose, I would suggest that you remove both end cam bearing covers on the cylinder head. That should allow the cam to drop down enough to get the chain off the sprocket. Then you can wiggle out the camshaft and remove the head or at least it will allow the chain to drop down off the bottom sprocket, so you can work it around enough to access the master link again.

Answer
Joel, the trick to get those screws loosened, is to use an impact driver tool, the kind you hit with a hammer. You must have one for working on motorcycles. Most m/c shops have them in stock. I always get a longer #3 bit and then use it to smack the screw heads directly with a hammer a few times to help jar the threads loose. Sometimes, that is all you need to get them to loosen up, but an impact driver makes it easier, too.
