Motorcycle Repair: Repairing a speedometer on a ninja, kawasaki ninja, analog meter

Question
Hi Mark,
I recently purchased a used 1989 Kawasaki Ninja 500ex and the speedometer doesn't work. I was wondering how I would go about repairing it. It is an analog meter as opposed to the newer digital ones.  Any help would be apprciated in this matter. =)

Answer
Hi Nathan,

Start by checking the speed cable. They are prone to rust and breaking.

Disconnect the cable from the back of the speedo and from the front wheel. Remove the inner cable from the cable housing and inspect for defects. Clean, lube, reassemble, and install if the cable appears fine.

If the cable is fine, not much you can do with the speedo. Replacement is the option, though it's rare that they fail.
