Question -
I am ready to replace a new inner primary case, however, both Harley service manual and Clymers manual say to loosen the engine to transmission bolts to align the transmission. Both manuals don't show me where exactly these bolts are or how many there are. I can see two bolts directly behind the rear cylinder that attach to the transmission. Are these the only bolts I need to loosen? Do need to look further for more bolts?
Answer -
Look under the trans. There are 5 studs with nuts which hold the trans to the trans plate. Four of them are in a square directly under the trans and the other is located on the right side of the bike attaching the trans to the frame.

Could not locate a trans plate with 4 bolts on my dyna, but did return to the Clymers manual and finally found a picture of the bolts I needed to loosen. Two behind the engine to the trans and two up front on the front motor mount. If I'm not mistaken softails have the trans mount plate with a four bolt pattern. To make this story short, I slapped on the CCI die cast inner primary cover, torqued the engine bolts down to specs and then the transmission bolts. I used red rtv on the two bottom bolts. Torqued the engine and trans mount bolts down. Buttoned everything up with new gaskets and put it on the road. Everything seemed to be fine. Bike rode well and was feeling quite proud of myself untill I found primary fluid all over the kick stand and lower frame. Can't seem to locate the leak since the fluid is so clean. Doesn't seem to leak when bike is in neutral and idling even when on a lift and in gear. But putt down the road a bit and fluid is all over the place. I guess the next step is to start all over again, although I'd like to find out where the leak is coming from first. Any way to color the primary fluid? Where do you think I might have screwed up?

Answer
Sorry about the bolts. I had a softail on the brain for some reason.
As to your leak. You can put a dye in the fluid. Automotive parts stores sells it. Your leak is either from the o-ring between the motor and the inner primary or the seal at the rear of the inner primary for the trans. I wouls suspect its the o-ring. You have to be careful with them as they might get pinched. When installing them I always put some silicone sealent on them to make sure they dont move.
