Motorcycle Repair: Old Harley 4 spd trouble, mr wells, mix match

Question
Mr Wells..
Thank You for the prior info on the old 4 spd trans problems..and..Yes..Your answers to our questions..were Correct! Upon removal of the ratchet top..I found the main shaft shifter fork
was broken near the shaft through the case that the shifter shaft rides on! I found a replacement
shifter fork to replace the broken one on the main shaft..but I'm not sure about what You were saying about the gear spacing..its my second time in a HD trans(the other is on my 95 Dyna)but,I'll
try to do what I can to help my friend out,to get him back up! The bike is a mix match of HD parts,
and I have no idea the year of the trans, but what I have been told, the main shifter fork should work
from 36-86(all the same) I'll replace the fork today for him..but should I look for anything else prior to re-installing the ratchet top?
Thank You for Your Time..
Respectfully..

Answer
You can replace the shifter fork, but you need to check the gear spacing. The problem is it takes a special tool to do that. If the gears are not spaced properly you can either break another shifter fork or worse yet, lock up between two gears.
Good luck and happy riding
