Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Yamaha XJ700 Float adjustment, rubber tubes, float bowl

Question
Mark,
I have been in the automotive service industry for over 19 years but my knowledge on motor cycles is somewhat limited. I read your example article on how to clean cycle carbs and thought it was great.
I re-bought a 1985 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim. This was my bike about 7 years ago. I sold it to a buddy of mine who did not drive it much and not at all in the last 3-4 years. I cleaned the carbs and have them back together on the bench - except for 3 screws for each float bowl.
Can you tell me where, on the outside of the (Hatachi-?) carb float bowls, is a good reference point to set the fuel level. I am using the clear rubber hose method. I can do it either on the bike or on the bench, just tell me which way to do it in regards to fuel level reference point. I do not have the special tool for this procedure so my clear rubber tubes are just that and nothing else. This is the first time I am attempting this so if there is a special way to level the bike, or the carbs on the bench, please let me know. The carbs are on the bench right now. I have looked on the web and can not find any spec on where the fuel level should be on the outside of the float bowl.
Any help you can offer would be great.
Thanks

(You can post this if you want, I did not see an option to do it.)

Answer
Hi Dave,

I don't have fuel service level specs on the Maxim, either.

Kawasaki and Honda are the only two manufacturers to provide such intel for this type of measurement. Other brands measure float height.

I'll send tech files to your email. They may be helpful, but will not have the specs you seek.

Respectfully,
