Motorcycle Repair: Tach, ohmeter, meter needle

Question
1982 FXB, Tachometer doesn't work.
Would like to check electrically if its the sender unit or the meter.
Can i use a voltmeter to measure if the sender sends a DC voltage or pulses or what to make the meter needle rotate?
Or can i use an ohmeter to measure ohms of the sender and the meter.

Your tach receives its pulses from the coil. So first thing to check is to make sure you have a good connection at the coil. Then check at the tach for a good connection. Use the OHM meter to make sure there is no break in the wire. If all this tests out fine then you have a bad tach and it needs to be replaced.
