Motorcycle Repair: Carb Cleaning, honda shadow spirit, air fuel mixture

Mike: I know you're a Harley dude, but can you please help me with a Honda question? I have a 1999 Honda Shadow Spirit VT1100. It has been sitting for 6 months and when I start it the gas leaks out of the bottom. I understand that this may be due to varnishing and I have the carb cleaning 101 info. from this website. But can you send me detailed tech files on carb cleaning. I'm very handy with tools, but a novice on working on bikes.

Your problem is that the float is stuck from sitting so long. Remove the carb and remove the float bowl. Also remove the jets, they might be plugged. Remove the air/fuel mixture acrew. Make sure you count the turns so you can get it back to where it was. Now, after taking the carb all apart, soak it in carb cleaner to get the junk out and with air blow everything out. Put it back together and you should be set.
