Motorcycle Repair: transmission shifting and oil, twin cam 88, harley dealers

Question
Mike,

What is your thoughts on using 80w90 transmission
oil verus harley 20w50 oil? I still have an intermittent problem shiftin from first gear to second once in a while(maybe a couple of times during a all day ride) The tech that changed my fluids after 500 miles (new bike)put 80w90 transmission oil in. I have a harley twin cam 88 engine and I know harley dealers use 20w50 transmision oil. Do you think with 80w90 which is used on rec-tech engines could be gining me the shifting problem?
When the problem happens the shifter gets stuck and I have to use more force to get it into second gear. But like I have been saying this only happens a couple of times during each riding day.But it seems to be constant. I'am trying to get more detailed info on it each time I ride.
I let someone else ride for awhile but it didn't happen?
Stuck on a cause

Thanks
tim

Answer
You must be talking about the synthic motor oil from harley. You shouldnt switch back and forth from synthic to semi synthic oil. Stick with one or the other.
the synthic oil seems to help the harleys shift better, but I think your problem is more serious. You problem sounds like you are getting stuck between gears and it needs to be looked at. You dont want to get the gears stuck and have them bind up or you will blow the trans.
You can try going back to the trans fluid you were using before and see if that is the problem, but I think you will need to have the trans looked at.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
