Motorcycle Repair: electronic ignition problems, harley sportster 1200, advance auto parts

Question
I recently had to lay my Harley Sportster down on its right side to avoid a collision. I broke the right footpeg mount and bent the brake pedal. after getting the bike safely home, I parked it and started searching for replacement parts. about two week later, I went out to start the bike, noticing I had left the run/off switch on the right handle bar in the on postion. I turned on the ignition, noticed I had power to the headlight, but not enough to start the bike. I had the battery recharged at a local Advance Auto Parts. When I returned with the batery recharged at around 80%, I reinstalled it, turned on the ignition, noticing that I now have no lights nor will the bike start. I am unsure as to where to look for this problem, knowing little about electronic ignitions. This is a 2000 Harley Sportster 1200/S. Any help or suggestions you can make to resolve this problem eould be greatly appricated. I am a disabled veteran living on a very limited budget. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Carl

Answer
Since you didnt have lights then you are not getting power. First, take a test light and check to see if you are getting 12 volts to the ignition switch. If you are then check your fuses to make sure none are blown. The lighting and ignition are on seperate fuses. If youbare not getting power then check he connections on the battery.
Good luck and happy riding
