Motorcycle Repair: mis-firing cylinder ?, virago 535, viragotech

Question
Mark, I am new to riding & own a 1998 Virago 535 w/ 2500 miles, and recently have been unable to ride due to what I think is a non-firing, front cylinder in the V-twin.
the bike sat idle for about 4 weeks (it does have a gas stabilizer added) but before that it was running like a top - carbs cleaned at seasons start by dealer. it will start & run - just real rough, and only the rear cyclinder gets hot - the front stays cold..and it sounds horrible. no change after 15 minutes at idle.
I have a manual, but getting to the spark plug is not clearly explained or diagramed & I am afraid to tear into the bike, not knowing what I am doing..manual says check plug first, have a new, charged battery..
your thoughts &/or suggestions ?

trying to avoid a trip to dealer, if possible..
thanks,
john

Answer
Hi John,

Even with fuel stabilizer added, I suspect fuel left in the float bowls has varnished and is obstructing fuel passageways. If so, the carbs need thoroughly cleaned (again).

It's important to accurately estimate the amount of fuel in the tank and add approiate amount of stabilizer. Adding too much stabilizer can cause problems. Adding too little is not effective.

You can visit the following website to learn more about servicing your Virago:

Service department flat-rates for service is very expensive. Especially for a recreational vehicle such as a MC.

With your level of experience, I recommend having a local tech inspect the problem for you. A tech's trained eye will save you money.
