Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Yamaha Virago 750 electrical, motor carbon brushes, yamaha virago 750

Question
The person I got this bike from said it had a charging problem, turned out the voltage reg was disconnected.  I got it running, it was charging up the battery when I cut it off.  I tried to start it again and after a few tries all I was getting was a click from the selenoid.  I can not get it to do anything with the starter button, but it will turn over if I put a screwdriver between the post on the selenoid.  I also don't have turn signals, brake light or horn now.  Is the selenoid bad or is there some other problem electrical?  I checked the relays according to the manual and they all passed.  What do you think?

Answer
Hi Legrand,

Usual cause for the clicking sound is a weak or defective battery, and/or worn starter motor carbon brushes.

Check the starter button for corrosion and rust. Sometimes the button does not conduct well.

Checking the starter motor requires disassembly once removed from the engine. Check brushes and comutator segments for resistance.

Check battery voltage with a multimeter. Check battery cell specific gravity with a hydrometer designed for use with MC's.
