Motorcycle Repair: kz750 b 1977 wiring, oil grease, defective wiring

Question
Hi Mark,

I have a 1977 kz 750b twin and I have a problem with the wiring. I have the wire leading from the points going to the black wire on the coil to complete the groung when the points contact to give the coil the signal to fire. However the Main (red/white) fuse burns out after a couple seconds of running. If the bike is sitting and then you turn on the ignition switch on all electrical coponents work, but if you turn the engine over and the points touch the fuse will again burn out in a couple of seconds even if you hand turned or foot crank it. I have a new Regulator in it and all wiring is working otherwise. I have a hot wire (yellow/red)going to the white on the coil. I have the positive battery terminal linked into the white and red primary from the regulator and all black grounds are grounded. Can you help. It all seems to hinge on the contact of the points.

Regards,

Dan

Answer
Hi Dan,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I've worked alot of overtime this week.

A direct short is blowing the circuit's fuse.

Check the primary lead and related insulators at the breaker points terminal for a short.

Check for defective wiring insulation (bare wiring) in the circuit.

Check circuit wiring for build up of dirt, grime, oil, grease, water or other conductive materials that may cause current flashover and direct short.

Respectfully,
