Motorcycle Repair: carb problem, air fuel mixture, crisp throttle response

Question
I have just finished putting a new carb kit into my 82 ViragoJ 920. This included all the jets but not the floats which i left the same. I printed out the specs from a service cd and set them accordingly as close as i could. Now the bike acts like it is starved for fuel or the fuel/air ratio is wrong. I removed the mixture screw and cleaned the chamber it was in but forgot to record the postion they were in when they were removed. I asked around and came up with a compromise of 3 turns down from fully tight.

Please help with any information.
There is 33,000 miles on the bike. Twin cylinder.

Answer
Hi Dan,

I usually start with two turns out with most air-fuel mixture screws. Three turns out is okay. Adjust the screws accordingly to get crisp throttle response.

For best results, follow instructions included with jet kit. If none, contact manufacturer.

I find that drop in (Stage I II III) jet kits usually require additional tuning to get the carburetors dialed in.
