Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim Exhaust, straight pipes, hi aaron

Question
Hey Mark,
My name is Aaron and I have an '85 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim.  I really enjoy this bike for what it cost and it runs pretty well.  The one thing I really don't like about it is the exhaust.  It has the factory silencer that is flared out (very ugly to me)and points right at where I'd like to have a pair of small saddlebags (I'm afraid it wouldn't be good to have the exhaust just a couple inches away).  I'm looking for an aftermarket exhaust that will work for my inline 4 cylinder, look a bit more custom and improve sound.  Straight pipes or turn outs would work just fine but I can't seem to find any and am not sure what I can use that will not screw up my bike.  Any help you can give me in steering me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.  My e-mail is ahooks@qconline.com

Answer
Hi Aaron,

Welcome to AllExperts.

I'm not familar with all the exhaust systems available for the Maxim.

I recommend calling one of the major MC parts retailers at their tool free numbers and ask the sales staff what they know. They have the catalogs in front of them and can quickly check availability.

I used to work with Competition Accessories in Ohio. The sales staff there was very knowledageable.

Otherwisee, visit the websites of aftermarket exhaust manufacturers such as: SuperTrapp, Kerker, Jardine, Vance & Hines, Muzzy, D & D, Cobra, Micron, Yoshimura, and others.
