Motorcycle Repair: oil leak, flapper valves, mile poker

Question
I have a 1996 XL 1200C that I have owned for 6 months, and have put 3000 miles on. I had a complete service performed at the local HD dealer about 2 months ago. Last night I went on a 75 - 80 mile poker run, this morning I find a light spray of oil on the rear exhaust heat sheild, the oil tank, and a slight drip of oil from the air cleaner case, with oil splattered inside the air cleaner case. There is no visible area I can tell where it is coming from.  Any idea's. Thanks,  Gary Edwards

Answer
Your bike breathes through two flapper valves located in covers above the heads. These let the air out that builds up. They also let a small amount of oil mist with is.
Your flapper valves might be weak and need replaced. Another fix is to get a kit that will allow you to vent the air to the bottom of the bike. The only other thing is to clean the air filter area every couple of thousand miles.
Good luck and happy riding
