Motorcycle Repair: stator, free troubleshooting, bill silver

Question
Hi Bill
Mike stays maxxed out so I'll throw this to you-I have a 1982cb900c with 35k, it runs great, I've had it 5 years, only problem-electrical. I've got a manual & vom. At idle lights are dim, at speed on the road-they are ok, slow down & hit the brake-dim,dim,dim. I've replaced the reg/rec with another used one-no difference. I've checked & tested, it puts out 2-2.5 amps @ 5000rpm- the book says 8amps min. The rotor checks ok. The stator is questionable. Is the stator bad or do I have 2 bad reg/recs? Thanks a lot! Roger

Answer
Roger check the rotor COLD and then HOT! This whole series of rotors are suspect, especially when you have replaced everything else! Very common problem with all the DOHC models (and the SOHC 650 Fours built during that time with the same brush type alternator).
Check the STATOR PLUG CONNECTOR to see if it is corroded or has melted down inside. That is another downfall of these bikes. They need to be bright and shiny connections.
