Motorcycle Repair: Starting problems, dyna low rider, jumper wire

Question
Hi Mike, I have a 1997 Dyna Low rider. I tried to start it today and all I got was a "chatter" or "clicking" noise coming from the electric starter motor. The engine would not turn over. I did check the charge on the battery and it was fully charged. Is my starter bad and is this an easy fix or will I have to bring it in?

Thanks, Nick

Answer
Locate the wire from the starter relay and unplug it. Take a jumper wire from the battery and touch the post on the starter, with the key on. If the starter works then you have a bad starter relay. If not, then you have a starter problem and it will have to be removed and tested.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
