Motorcycle Repair: hydrolic lifters, hydraulic lifter, pushrod

Question
HI Mike one last question , how would you know if a hydraulic lifter is pumping up and holding its pump when using stock non adjustable push rods. I would think if it collapsed totally, the motor would not run, but if it collapsed partially how would you know? Thank you very much for your past answers they were very helpful in helping me understand more about lifters.

Answer
A motor will run without them pumped up. hte valves dont open all the way though and they make quit a noise. Once they pump up they quiet down. If you install new ones they dont have any oil in them and you have to wait for them to pump up. If you have one that you think is not pumping up it will make a racket, usually at idle or high RPMs. Another way you cn tell is to slide the pushrod cover up and turn the pushrod with your fingers. If is not pumping up there will be alot of up and down play in the pushrod.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
