Motorcycle Repair: starter/solenoid ?, starter solenoid, starter relay

Question
i have a 1983 fxsb . i recently put a new kicker cover on . when i was finished my bike wouldn't start . it would only click , like when you have a loose battery cable on a car . i changed the solenoid .  using a new one , it would only spin . using a used one it would then only click . my kick start doesn't work like it did before either . i am sure i lined up the crank gear properly . is it possible though , that it may need to be turned downward a geartooth ?  thank-you for yor response .

Answer
On the kicker cover, you will have to remove it and reinstall it. Leave the kicker arm on the shaft when you remove it. When installing push the kicker all the way down to the bottom and then slide the cover on.
As to the starter. First, make sure you have good contact on the battery posts and that the ground is good at the frame. Check the posts on the starter solenoid to make sure the they are tight. If the starter still just spins then check the solenoid by jumping across the hot post of the solenoid to the small post with a screwdriver. The bike should turn over. If it does not, then the solenoid is bad. If it does, then check the breakers first. You might have a weak one and not letting enough amps through. If they are ok, then replace the starter relay.
Good luck and happy riding
