Motorcycle Repair: 1991 FLHTCU valve noise, hydraulic lifters, evo motor

Question
I bought this 1991 FLHTCU Ultra Glide with around 40,000 miles on it. It has some valve noise...the typical tapping noise. I don't know if it has had the cam and lifters changed or not. I can't find how to adjust the push rods for hydraulics. Also, how can I tell if it has hydraulic lifters? It would be very helpfull if you could tell me how to adjust hydraulic lifters on this Evo motor. If it has had the lifters changed to solids, I know how to adjust them.

Answer
First, are you sure you have adjustable pushrods? remove the clip in the pushrod cover and slide the pushrod cover up to make sure.
Unless somebody has changed the lifters you should have hydraulics. Hydraulics will be flat on the top with a indent.Once they are set they do not need adjusting unless you remove the lifters. Its hard to tell you how to adjust them due to the fact that different manufactures use different thread pitches, hence differet turns of the nut.
Harleys are known for tapping noise from the valve train, so you probably dont have a problem.
To adjust them, I can get you close. Lift the rear tire off the ground. Turn the rear wheel so the front exhaust is in the closed position. Lenghten the pushrod until it is tight. Now let the bike sit for about 15 minutes, so the hydraulic bleeds down. recheck it. If its tight, back it off so you can turn the pushrod freely between your fingers. If its loose turn it again until tight and do the waiting.Keep doing this until you have no tightness and lock it. Now do to the next one and do the same thing.
Good luck and happy riding
