Motorcycle Repair: Engine Oil, honda nighthawk 550, 1983 honda nighthawk

Question
I just bought a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550 and I think the oil is a little low.  I don't have the owner's manual.  How far on the dipstick should you see the oil the middle of the XXXXX pattern?  What grade of oil should I put in the engine?

Thanks,

Gary

Answer
Hi Gary,

Measure the oil level with the MC on level ground and on the center stand. After wiping dipstick, insert it into hole. Do not thread into the hole. Oil level should be between the cross-hatch (xxx) marking area, preferably to the highest point for best protection.

Visit the local auto parts store and check premium brand oils. Read the oil container label for which weight oil to use. Use the appropriate oil for your environment's temperatures. Most 10W40's and 10W30's are suitable for most US climates.
