Motorcycle Repair: 1982 v 45 magna dropping 2 cyl., v45 magna, electrical testing

Question
I have a 1982 v45 magna I asked you about it before and you told me to check carbs and fuel system. I have had the carbs changed and will start right up cold but when it warms up it is dropping 2 cyl. I have swapped the coils with good ones off a running bike and still the same problem. I was told that it mite be electrical, can you tell me if there could be something to this. It will stay running if over 2000 rpms . But will not restart hot, any feedback would be helpful. Do you think I may be over my head on this , and that I should find a shop to take it to. thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Russ,

You're already over your head or you wouldn't be here, respectfully.

Electrical problems can be frustrating even for pro techs. Some components cannot be tested. In such cases testing requires comparing with a known good component. Not an easy to perform test when a CDI costs $300.

Each ignition coil fires two cylinders. Identifiable via tracing plug leads. Is the problem with same two cylinders?

I suspect heat is causing excessive resistance within the wiring, connectors, or electronic components. High resistance may be preventing current flow and malfunction.

The ignition system components need to be inspected and tested. Do you have the service manual? If not, get a copy and follow the procedures for electrical testing.

I return test and tech intel via email. There is no email address for you with your question as requested.

Respectfully,
