Motorcycle Repair: Rough running vulcan 500ltd, shively, spark plugs

Question
I have had a Vulcan 500ltd for about 4 weeks and have not had a problem until yesterday. For some reason, it ran rough and had very little power. It would not even start under full choke, runs real rough under no choke, does a little better under 1/2 choke. The dealer said to adjust the engine idle and it does a little better at high speed and 1/2 choke. However, it still feels under powered and stalls frequently.

Answer
Hi Conley,

From the description provided, it's difficult to diagnose the problem.

Adjusting the idle on a rough running engine will not improve the rough running condition.

If the VN500 was just purchased, return it to the shop and complain, respectfully. In most cases, they will be willing to correct the problems.

Things you can do:

Remove the spark plugs and inspect them. Record which cylinder each plug is removed from. Clean or replace the plugs as necessary. Visit NGK's website and compare the VN's plugs to those pictured on the website.

http://www.ngk.com/sparkplug411.asp

Once the site opens, look to the left menu and select "Plug Problems" to view and compare spark plugs.

Remove and inspect the air filter. Clean or replace as necessary.

Consider cleaning the carburetors if the engine was not started for a period, or the VN was stored over the winter.

I suspect the problem is either a lack of fuel or a lack of air.

I return tech info files by email. There was no email address with this question as requested in my instructions.
