I built a custom bike and it will not start.  I know it's not a Harley but it is pretty basic as far as wiring.  I bought a used 100CI Revtech, with the standard ignition, my wiring harness is hooked up and it starts I.E. getting gas, belt turns, has spark, exhaust or something comes out of the pipes (Samson, there short).  BUt it will not start.  I adjusted the carb, just messing a round and some flames came out of the pipes.  So I re adjusted the screws back to factory setting and no flames.  My question is why do you think it won't take off?  My coil is a single fire/single plug set up and the plugs are new.  The motor ran when it was pulled out of the other bike.  It is supposed to have 2500 miles.  It had the original MIkuni 42 mm carb.  I drained the gas in the carb and let it run through with new gas.  Also so you know, when I tested the spark the front cylinder about knocked me out and the rear one I saw it but it didn't shock me.  Should all sparks about knock you out or not?  I have had the choke on and off and turn the throttle in every combination and will not run.  I also installed compression releases that went in where the other spark plug would go in the motor. Last thing when I try to start it, it begins to smell like gas very badly in my garage, coming from the pipes they smell like gas. Any help would be great, I feel like everything is working so far.  Let me know if you can help and thank you.

From what I have read in your question, your coil is not right for the ignition. You say you are running a standard ignition (which should be duel fire) and your coil is single fire. You are either going to have to change the coil or the ignition. A single fire coil will not work with a duel fire ignition.

Mike,
Thanks for responding so quickly.  I failed to mention that the ignition has a tiny switch on it for single or dual fire.  The directions that came with the motor showed how to wire it both ways.  So I checked my coil and it is a single fire and I checked the ignition and it is set correctly.  Would the carb need to be cleaned it sat in my air conditioned garage for about 9 months before trying to start it?  If you still think its the coil please let me know.  I apprecitate the help.  This site is really cool, I am glad I found it.
Thanks again
Jeremy

Answer
Ok, your good with the ignition, but you should be getting the same spark with both plugs. Recheck your wiring in the ignition. If you are sure it is right, then its either your timing or the carb. Check the directions that came with the ignition to see how to static time it. Static timing is when you set the base timing when the motor is not running, but should get it started. Once that is done, check the carb. Carbs dont do well sitting that long. If any gas was left in it, it will turn to varnish and will plug the jets. i would pull the carb apart and clean it out. Remove the jets and look through them to make sure they are not plugged.
