Motorcycle Repair: Problem with rear wheel hub on Indian Chief, wheel hub, rear hub

Question
Good afternoon,

I have a 2000 Indian Chief that I recently removed the rear wheel to replace the rear tire.  In taking the wheel off the axle seemed to bind inside the rear hub and had to be forced off the bike.  When I try to pass the axle only through the rear hub it binds in several spots even if the wheel is not on the bike.  It can only be advanced with force.

Is this a bad hub or a bent axle?

Thank you for any assistance,
Mike

Answer
I usually only answer questions on harleys, but I might be able to help. Your axle shouls go through two bearings, on on the left and one on the right side of the hub. First, check them for a burr. Take a straightedge and check the axle. If its straight then check it for burrs. If you find nothing then you need to pull the bearings and inspect them. The axle should go though the bearings with just a little clearence. You might need to change the bearing if you dont see anything.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
